"I bring up [http://mappa.mundi.net/cartography/Palace/ Memory Palaces] not to necessarily encourage a return to the ancient art in its same form.

The Art of Memory and the Method of Loci (back in the days) was really quite an immense visualization trick...and a feat I think that few people today would consciously use. What I'm very excited about is the probability that we're entering a new phase in the internet and a new form of memory retention (which traces back to this concept of memory palaces) will become second nature to the masses:continued )

ok finally! here are some pics (I couldn't think to take any at the opening- wish I had but I was way too overwhelmed and talking to everyone- so we went back to get some installation shots a few days later). Here's the accompanying text:

Darlene Charneco: Gameland
Reception: Thursday Dec 14, 6-8pm

Morgan Lehman is pleased to present Gameland, an exhibition of new mixed media works by Darlene Charneco.

Through the images in Gameland, Charneco continues to explore the meeting points of real life and virtual life, concepts mined in earlier exhibitions with Morgan Lehman Gallery, Everywhere and Cyburbia. In this exhibition, Charneco investigates social networks and the gradual reorganization of information on the web into shareable and intuitively navigable 3D spaces. She is inspired by the blurring boundaries between dream and waking activities, the implications of our rapidly increasing interconnectivity and the evolution of an accessible collective memory.

Ms. Charneco's work draws on a number of sources, including network theory, geographic information systems, video games, virtual worlds, childhood toys and educational tools. It is informed by her research and participation in online communities such as Myspace, LiveJournal and Flickr and an experimental community project called BetterWorldIsland within the 3D virtual world of SecondLife.

Ms. Charneco uses household nails, acrylic, enamel, glitter, model houses and trees, and multiple layers of resin to create 3-dimensional artworks which represent various aspects of these visualizations.

"From an aerial view, it is hard to ignore the similarities of our cities and roads to the internal structures of large and complex organism. One might consider the Web as a growing nervous system, full of sensors, gathering and sending information to and fro."

"What is our role within this organism?"

Another milestone:

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) have arrived in Second Life, .....The NOAA's sim is called Meteroa, which is derived from the Greek adjective meteoras which means 'suspended in the air' . On this lovely island sim you can find fully interactive educational demonstrations about the ocean and weather....(including tsunami simulations!)...

"Back when Second Life was a tiny world, Residents could magically teleport point-to-point: that is, from any place on the grid to any other place, just like that. Shortly after launching commercially, however, Linden Lab introduced "telehubs", scattered throughout the grid. From then on, when you teleported from point A to point B, you were actually sent to the telehub nearest to point B-- usually a few hundred meters away, meaning you had to travel the remaining distance on your own power (fly, walk, vehicle.) In the same way, in the offline world, that a public transit system tends to create a civic gathering place and neighborhood around each of its stops, telehubs were a way to mitigate the urban sprawl of a constantly expanding world. A place to meet folks, and a chance to look around, wherever you were going. Smart urban metaverse planning, in other words.
All that's about to change. Linden Lab recently announced that an imminent update would re-introduce P2P teleportation. Telehubs-- which, unsurprisingly, drove up the real estate prices of the surrounding land-- would then be transitioned into some kind of public/community space...."

Finally went onto SecondLife last night to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] elektrix and go to the Better World Island Launch Party. O-net member Sue Braiden created the whole Island in secret over the last 2 months, we are all amazed, though we had discussed it a long while. There's a PeaceTiles Center gallery for Lars and so much more. I've got to go back and really do a full tour. ElektriX took a bunch of great snapshots which I get to share with you here:

MY what beautiful wings you have, ElektriX!

stop staring...;)

You can see more pictures of other visits to Second Life on ElektriX's flickr album here

Just sharing this from the SecondLife messageboards because I think it's a good project:

"Supportforhealing island, using the creative talents of Luna Bliss, is being transformed into a special place of tranquility and relaxation and we need some artists/sculptors to help us put the finishing touches.
As a focal point we would like to commission a very special statue to go ino our new temple.
The temple will be non-denominational and will concentrate on the aspects common to all religious traditions of ethical behaviour, compassion and selflessness.
We would like our centrepiece to represent compassion and altruistic love.

There will be a commision of $3000L payable to the artist who we select to create this work of art plus the possibility of further commissions (plus your name in lights )
We may also use other good artists elsewhere on the island on a commission basis.
If you would like to be considered for this commission contact Zafu Diamond or Luna Bliss who will give a guided tour of the island and show you the temple to get your creative juices flowing

Please do feel free to come and have a look around and find out more about what we do even if you are not interested in the commission. Everyone is always welcome at supportforhealing to chill out , meet friends or visit the labyrinth or my retreat area which has spiritual talks running 24/7.

All ideas for the main sculpture commission must be received by the 23rd October as we will be making a final decision by the end of the month.
Kindest wishes
Zafu"

"Avatars of all denominations and spiritual beliefs have a new place to worship in Second Life, at the Interfaith Temple, built only about a month ago by Athel Richelieu, who is not yet out of his teens in his first life (though old enough for SL proper, to be sure).

The beautiful, pure white marble monument he built rises from the sim of Ambulyx. Inside this simple yet very functional worship center is ...read more )

*Sigh* I can't wait to get back to SecondLife. With all that's going on in 'first life'and my computer limitations I just haven't been on in Ages and I miss it SO. Every time I take a peek at message boards and such about what's going on I am overwhelmed with hope and excitement for all that is possible there:
Second Life Future Salon Can you FEEEEEL it?? I get chills.

Hopefully in August I can get back on and immerse a bit. SO much I want to do there.Memory palaces and edutainment and fundraising, oh MY.

Getting closerrrr to 3D immersive web-browsinnnng.......:)

From Tony Walsh's Clickable Culture

"The virtual world of Second Life will leverage an embedded version of Mozilla Firefox in a future release, supporting in-world web browsing and the display of web pages on the surfaces of 3D objects, according to developers Linden Lab.

Work is now underway on the Firefox-powered features. Development will proceed along the following "road map":static external webpage in 2D browser, no interaction.static external webpage on prim surface, no interactionupdate URL for primitive, all viewers get updateLSL call to set URL for primitivewebpage from script/notecard/typed-in HTMLinteractive web page in 2DThe integrated browser will not support Flash initially, and there will be limits to the number of simultaneously-viewable pages. The browsing function will be able to be turned off client-side, since it requires more resources.

The addition of web browsing in Second Life is a long-awaited feature that brings SL up to speed with the Croquet project, its closest competitor in the VR space. Integrating web pages into Second Life will radically-expand the creative options currently available to users, who can already build their own VR content."

From News.com: A Virtual World with Peer to Peer Style
excerpt:
""Second Life" has 28,000 people online today, and some inhabitants are already making more than $100,000 a year in real-world money by selling digital wares constructed inside the world or running full-fledged role-playing games.

"Second Life" is built on a distributed model, in which numerous servers are connected together, each one representing about 16 acres of land in the digital world. Those patches of digital space are seamlessly connected together to create the world as experienced by visitors.... "

"As a massively multiplayer online game, many people think of Second Life as little more than a virtual playground. But an increasing number of people and organizations are employing the game in applications that are useful for far more than entertainment..."

Met up briefly with the lovely [livejournal.com profile] elektrix on SecondLife.
We hung around at Jamie's Hideaway for a bit (Pam's place). Pam had to run off to a real life Technology and Design conference so I teleported Elektrix there and we 'met' for the first time.:)Odd, no? Here's a shot of the 'fireside chat' area...(we're lying down, this is a view from above)...there's a strange raccoon atop the fireplace mantle that I wish you could see. ha. But I do love the colors/patterns of the carpet..and the firelight made for a lovely glow..:)

This morning I searched for and found a beautiful Temple of Buddha on SecondLife and my avatar and I meditated together for the first time. It was wonderful. The meditation script is pretty amazing...the slowww and subtle breathing movements...the eyes...I felt myself relax right into it just watching her/me. This is something quite profound when you think of it. Such a learning tool..

Landmarked this spot as a favorite to return to often. My sound wasn't working but there is even a spinning tibetan prayer wheel near the buddha with Om Mani Padme Hum as a 'sound'! I can't wait to return and hear it. This Temple is located in Kasba.

Yay for the speedy ease of linkage and the wonders it can do.:)
I read this wonderful post on Tony Walsh's blog 'Clickable Clulture'last week
Transcending Physicality in Second Life and I was moved by it and decided to repost it with a link on the 'gaming technology for social good' discussion thread on omidyar.net.
Pam Omidyar was intrigued and looked into it more and she and I met up on Second Life and visited the Live2Give Island itself (along with Tom).
SO inspiring and wonderful what they've done there. I can't wait to show B. (B worked with a group of similarly disabled adults for quite a while and also worked at United Cerebral Palsy). Next thing you know, Pam has decided she is going to help Live2Give with some funding for new technology! :)! And then next thing you know both John Lester and June-Marie Mahay of Live2give are on omidyar.net and on 'our' Better Island discussion thread and all sorts of people are inspired and want to help and a new discussion thread 'Innovative Use of Technology for the extremely disabled' is started. And June-marie emails me and she's so sweet and we will meet up on SL soon(hopefully with B somehow). He's been researching adaptive devices for quite a while...and well, how perfect.
whew. this stuff is just so FAST!! Connections, connections.
Something as easy as just moving information along on the web can really make a difference quick! hmmmmmm

The wormhole activity is strange. It must have somehow reached backwards through time to my dream 6 years ago (read my last entry if confused), everything between then and now reassembled and I walked out of it here, ready to collaborate on the next step.:
