This morning I searched for and found a beautiful Temple of Buddha on SecondLife and my avatar and I meditated together for the first time. It was wonderful. The meditation script is pretty amazing...the slowww and subtle breathing movements...the eyes...I felt myself relax right into it just watching her/me. This is something quite profound when you think of it. Such a learning tool..

Landmarked this spot as a favorite to return to often. My sound wasn't working but there is even a spinning tibetan prayer wheel near the buddha with Om Mani Padme Hum as a 'sound'! I can't wait to return and hear it. This Temple is located in Kasba.

Is this a game you are playing? or did you make this game?

SecondLife is a huge 3D immersive virtual world that is completely and continually built by the users themselves. It's less a 'game' than a social space that you can explore in and meet up with others in. It's so wonderful to fly around and see what's been built...and everything is interactive. It's like a shared dreamworld.
You get to create your own avatar (there are simple guidelines in the orientation and it's really intuitive and doesn't require any previous 3d skills)...so I tried to make mine look a little like me...you change the face shape, the hair, the body etc...dress it and go! Then the avatar is you and you explore this place. It's reaaaally amazing. If your system can handle it, I'd recommend you check it out yourself- there's a free trial. Here's their FAQ page (http://secondlife.com/faq.php)

The part that interests me most is that what it becomes is up to us.

For a skilled techie one like yourself, I'd refer you to this page:

That's all beyond me, but I and others get to experience whatever is built there!

And here's a good post about SL on Tony Walsh's blog

That's pretty cool. I'm not surprised that 2L has a buddhist temple.

Do you have a second life?

Date: 2005-02-20 08:00 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] resipisco.livejournal.com
Nah. I volunteer with an NPO called the ASF and Cory Andrejka (Linden Labs' primary internal developer) gave a presentation on 2L at our conference last year. From the audience's response, you'd think he was a marketing exec. Afterwards, everybody was talking about getting a second life, but first life sunk in and none of us had the time.

hehe. hmm well it's a hard question. I'd say yes, in that they were not available from the regular set of options and I had to get them from elsewhere and 'attach them' to my avatar's head.
For an embarassing while they would only attach sideways.haha

How do you landmark a place as a favorite?

Date: 2005-02-20 07:25 am (UTC)

O.K., that's fine, I found out how to landmark a place. But I don't know how to meditate... or use special gestures. I found a special spot I'm really interested to buy, but it's $7995 and I only have $900. Do you know of any trick I can use to make money?

Peace,

Julie

hey julie!
sorry, I was out last night..let's see..well, the meditation script is actually attached to the object I was sitting on at the Temple of Buddha! All you have to do it click 'sit here' and it initiates the meditation in your avatar. It's really a wonderful script! You don't have to 'know' anything.
well as far as land goes...I thought everyone is given a 512 plot to start now...is this true? If so you can put yours up for auction and try to make some money off it towards buying the plot you want....
or you can just put a price on it and see if there would be any takers.Usually it's the people right around you who want to make their plot bigger by taking over adjoining plots.
I really don't know much about making money there. They give you a stipend every week so just waiting and not spending will increase your bank gradually. That's mostly how I have my linden.I'm probably going to sell my 512 plot soon so I can contribute and do things on Better World Island...
You can also try your hand at building/creating something and putting it for sale/duplication.
Oh! and invite some friends to try out SL for the free trial! There's a referral fee, I forget how much...if they mention your name in registering. That's probably a good way- since they'll like it anyway and you'll have more peeps to play with.!
You can get linden also by attending certain events and classes I believe...
There might be a thread on the secondlifeforums (http://forums.secondlife.com/) that's more helpful than I.

thank you :-) it seems we don't have a free land by default, but I found a list of cheap small lands for sale. The thing is that they're not very interesting -- I keep searching/shopping.

I discover something at each visit in SL!

No free land by default, but if you have a monthly account you can hold up to 512m2 of land w/o incurring land use fees.
For people who have never held land before SL has the 512m2 plots set for you to buy for L$512 - i think it's one of the tabs up top while playing SL.

Otherwise you are left with purchasing on your own which can get expensive at times.

I had lots of land in Phobos for months but then realized i really didn't need to be paying an extra $40/month for 'virtual' land.

I'm enjoying SL a little bit more now that i'm landless.

I don't know about uninteresting land in SL - I mean you can totally transform it with objects, buildings, virtual landscaping...

It's unintersting land when there are all kinds of bars/markets/buildings of all kinds all around. I'm looking for a peaceful place. :-)

Hello Ava - I invite you to visit Lotus (208, 56) - it would be a great place to build peace environment -- what about a gallery for your artwork for example and where to talk about 10% practice and humanitarian actions -- do Better World have a space of their own?

I'm thinking of becoming a Premium member, because I want to build.

Also visit the Philosopheum. Imagine a place like this to create a gallery of your artwork. ;-)

Don't know if she's online now but i was just going in. Meet you if you're in?

Funny... I was working when I remembered I left my backpack on the mat, so I logged in SL and went back to Jamies's lil hideaway where, by chance, I found my backpack where I've left it sooner. :-D
