Discussion on Memory Palaces, Artifacts and Icons for the Future
hosted by Ava Dougall and Mnemosign Nemeth.
at NMC campus, Outreach 110,177,24. As part of NMConnect in SecondLife.

Ava and Mnemosign..preparing our talk....our very first collaboration...:)!
with many other browsers and wikis open....trying to multitask and focus.
big learning curve.

Finally it's time and IN Kenzo gives us a ride to Outreach

Just a pic of an artwork in progress. This is my Self-Assembling Memory Palace. Course in my mind it is dynamic and fluid with the bits and spaces floating and connecting like snowflakes.. overlapping into temporary labyrinthian configurations based on associative memory. Within the large green square is an aerial/blueprint of the first floor of my childhood home...a sort of armature I envision attracting and embedding object/memories/files into for personal navigational ease.

"Most Buddha-figure systems include a mandala palace, often called an immeasurably magnificent palace (gzhal-yas khang), in which the Buddha-figures of the system reside. The structure of the palaces models that of ancient Indian palaces, although the roofs suggest Chinese influence. The palaces are square, mostly with two but occasionally with more than two stories, and have portals leading to entrance halls on each side and an archway beyond each portal. The walls are multilayered in thickness and are topped with moldings and other complex and ornate structural jeweled features.

Each architectural feature represents a particular aspect of the path to enlightenment. In regard to the Vajrabhairava mandala, for example, the four sides of the palace signify the four noble truths, the five colors of the floor and of the layers of the walls represent the five types of deep awareness, and so on."

Does anyone know if there is yet a mandala palace on SecondLife? A matter of time I think. Let us build it, I will meet you there.:)

Getting closerrrr to 3D immersive web-browsinnnng.......:)

From Tony Walsh's Clickable Culture

"The virtual world of Second Life will leverage an embedded version of Mozilla Firefox in a future release, supporting in-world web browsing and the display of web pages on the surfaces of 3D objects, according to developers Linden Lab.

Work is now underway on the Firefox-powered features. Development will proceed along the following "road map":static external webpage in 2D browser, no interaction.static external webpage on prim surface, no interactionupdate URL for primitive, all viewers get updateLSL call to set URL for primitivewebpage from script/notecard/typed-in HTMLinteractive web page in 2DThe integrated browser will not support Flash initially, and there will be limits to the number of simultaneously-viewable pages. The browsing function will be able to be turned off client-side, since it requires more resources.

The addition of web browsing in Second Life is a long-awaited feature that brings SL up to speed with the Croquet project, its closest competitor in the VR space. Integrating web pages into Second Life will radically-expand the creative options currently available to users, who can already build their own VR content."

I'm SO supposed to be cleaning and I'm stealing time here while B naps because I HAVE to mention a bit about memory maps! Ok, so Google bought Keyhole which is major. And now we've got an 'annotated memory map' trend starting up. This may seem like just a neat novelty...but I believe we're witnessing the sweet tender green buds of what is to be a massive collaborative reorganization of humanity's information within navigable immersive webspaces. So exciting. a big step in our evolution really.
As the tools and images become more and more commonplace, we will all be able to integrate a more detailed topsight vision into our daily lives. This grants us a better understanding of our place in the world and the systems/larger organism that we are all a part of..we may be more inclined to participate in shaping and sustaining our communities, especially when given the most intuitive of tools. hmmmm
And that's to say nothing of the gradual creation of an interconnected memory palace/ experiential collective memory.:)

(See, and they thought you'd have blown up the planet by now. I knew ya'll had potential. Well, we'll see. Go Earthians, you can do it!)

More memory maps.

"Reasons for action 3

The way Doug Engelbart perceives it: 3A
*Our world is a complex place with urgent problems of a global scale. 3A1
*The rate, scale, and complex nature of change is unprecedented and beyond the capability of any one person, organization, or even nation to comprehend and respond to. 3A2
*Challenges of an exponential scale require an evolutionary coping strategy of a commensurate scale at a cooperative cross-disciplinary, international, cross-cultural level. 3A3
*We need a new, co-evolutionary environment capable of handling simultaneous complex social, technical, and economic changes at an appropriate rate and scale. 3A4
*The grand challenge is to boost the collective IQ* of organizations and of society. A successful effort brings about an improved capacity for addressing any other grand challenge. 3A5
*The improvements gained and applied in their own pursuit will accelerate the improvement of collective IQ. This is a bootstrapping strategy. 3A6
*Those organizations, communities, institutions, and nations that successfully bootstrap their collective IQ will achieve the highest levels of performance and success. 3A7
(It is essentially these perceptions that have underlain the researches by Engelbart and his team, work that laid to many innovations in computing and is now continuing in the development of an open hyperdocument system.) 3A8

".. Doug Engelbart developed throughout a lifetime a sense of mission, which the Bootstrap Institute seeks to implement. Some terms used in the following mission statement are briefly explained in footnotes appended to this page. 4A

The Institute's mission is to: )

I bring up Memory Palaces not to necessarily encourage a return to the ancient art in its same form.
The Art of Memory and the Method of Loci (back in the days) was really quite an immense visualization trick...and a feat I think that few people today would consciously use. What I'm very excited about is the probability that we're entering a new phase in the internet and a new form of memory retention (which traces back to this concept of memory palaces) will become second nature to the masses:

I've been Moving towards something. Catching glimpses in the fog, chasing.
In dreams, in art, in words.
It has felt oh so Important...yet I'd had great trouble putting it into words.
B would sometimes lose patience with my enthusiastic yet scattered talk. "I'm sorry, I just don't see what you're getting at...why recreate your grandmother's house..(online/3D) or the house you grew up in...sure you can imbed the objects with text/links/filefolders as you say..but why would someone..a stranger..visit?" And I couldn't answer...I just knew it was a sample..of a type of mapping..a type of organization ...that would change the way the web is experienced...make us capable of accessing and Experiencing and in a way Integrating the memories of the Others more intuitively. And something about when we really and truly do that consistantly..we are Remembering...and zooming towards..._________. I would throw my hands up..frustrated..so much wanting to come through..but garbled at the gate.Blueprints!...mandalas!..familiar steps/memories..virtual worlds..billions of users...Enlightenment!REintegration!GUrglegaaa!!read more )
