Last night I dreamt of tornadoes ripping apart a city...a group of us watching..no time to flee, no where to go...we watched it tear through the street next to us...debris flying, windows shattering...
and then it was over. gone. the sunlight strange. We were spared. I worried about the people in the buildings..called down into a basement bar where I had seen people flee into...but I was afraid my voice alone might unsettle some precariously hanging wall.

Date: 2003-06-05 03:46 pm (UTC)Growing up in southern Wisconsin, we used to have tornado warnings all the time. As a young child I was plagued with horrible nightmares of tornadoes--vacuuming me out the window of my house as I tried to run for the basement but couldn't move because of the amazing suction force.
They used to show us the standard scary tornado footage in school with the flying cows, the flying pitchforks, and the flying scary ladies on bicycles. In one video, they showed a 2x4 go clear through a 2-foot thick concrete wall at something like a million miles per hour. Pretty crazy.
Every 3rd wednesday of the month at noon they'd test the sirens, and you'd forget about it every time and think a twister was coming--or a communist air raid. Either way, we all knew what to do: Duck and Cover!

Anywhere you were, they could get you...the huge wall of water type thing...you're looking up and it's the moment before..SMACK! One particularly creative one had huge waves with lightning bolts shooting out from the tops. You just don't mess with these things.
In adulthood I've moved on to snake-nightmares. Really un-fun to deal with in the quantities that appear. This tornado one was novel.
