Here are some pictures of the box-artwork I just finished for the East End Hospice charity auction.
(about EEH: East End Hospice cares for the terminally ill in their homes, providing pain and symptom control, as well as spiritual and emotional support to patients, their families and loved ones. No one is ever turned away, regardless of his or her financial situation.)
Since I've been working with the theme of empathy, I figured it would be even more appropriate for this occasion, so I made a 'Threads of Empathy' box. The definition you'll see is high-gloss ink-jet printed along with a small detail photo and set behind plexi-glass on the left side of the box inside. The media I used for the sculptural elements: nails, carved wood, tinted resin, enamel, sand, and monofilament 'connections', all set into a modified cigar-box.

my new year's resolution was to explore empathy... it gets pretty abstract up here sometimes and i find empathy necessary grounding. thanks for the reminder :o)

it's a beautiful piece. high-gloss papier gets three thumbs up!

When I want to shake my foundations and apathy hard I pick up a book called 'Material World- A Global Family Portrait'which reminds me that while I'm here immersed in my life and 'problems', I am forgetting that others are living incredibly hard lives RIGHT NOW. Lives I can hardly imagine...and it takes that book to coax me to see it and to want to use my 'more priviledged' position to try to help.
Then there's empathy with ALL others...just coming outside myself to try see a situation from someones ELSE'S eyes, with their perspective, fears, desires, needs,etc..
We all can use tangible reminders of empathy. It's so easy to get caught up in seeing life as 'our reality'.

looks really good but it creeps me out a bit, the last one i saw was in an aids centre. looking at all that writing by people who knew they were going to die soon saddenned me too much.

Do you mean a box-artwork? (when you said 'last one'?)
*sigh* yes, who can help not being saddened by that? I have an almost creepy way of looking at life sometimes...like it's always borrowed time. I see the accident or incident that COULD have happened all the time...and am amazed and grateful that it didn't and I still have time. Can't say it's a light feeling...but does help me appreciate my life/time more.

There's something special about boxes - I love making my patchwork ones.

Most have been given away as presents but I have a couple around which I'll get to pose for me, though it may be a while before I get the film developed.
