*whew!!*
I wanted to post from Miami but everything was just a whirlwind and the gallery laptop in the room was having trouble keeping a connection....so I figured I'd wait til I got back. B and I drove down in the rented minivan packed with my art. Drove straight through, stopping only for bathroom and snacks. I drove through the Carolinas so he could get 6 hours rest. Wasn't as bad as I imagined, kept going listening to cds...Devdas soundtrack worked the best...singing along, picturing the movie in my head, I flew along. FOr the final stretch of my turn I used the Run,Lola,Run soundtrack for the adrenaline. Then we were there and just went straight to setting up the room with the gallery owners. After that we napped at our room in the Creek for a bit...

but I was excited to get out and look around. So after a bit, we went out to get some food on Lincoln Road, each got a cup of wine with our 'gourmet pizza' and relaxed out at the sidewalk table, peoplewatching and feeling fine, laughing that we escaped to Miami somehow in winter.
First day of the fair:CRAZINESS!!!
What a time! It seemed every gallery, art dealer, was there. either for ArtBasel, -scope, NADA, the new smaller Frisbee fair, etc etc. Art OVERLOAD. I don't know how they do it. These troopers were going through every fair...and the local galleries and museums all timed events as well. I pretty much stayed at -scope, a lot of time in my room (308) and then wandering through a lot of the other rooms, meeting artists and gallery owners, talking about the pieces. SO many oddly familiar faces I was convinced that I was in a game with limited avatar choices.;) I just couldn't bear to drag around my our huge camera, though I regret it of course. Now all I've got are solo pics and mug shots from quiet times in the room. sorry kids. maybe when I get a small camera or one of those cellphone ones I'll get a lot more active shots. As it is I SO wish I could've snapped pics of all the people I met so I would have a accessible mnemonic file to help me remember. anyhoo.
Here are some shots of how we set up the room at the TownHouse:

Sally and Jay of the gallery in the last. Coffee addicts we all were to keep going. Cuban cafe con leches from across the street that is. TOOOO sweet if you say regular. crazy sweet.Just keep it in mind, eh?
I had a LOT of fun with my outfits those days. Lots of different Kimono tops, funny hair and my new cake charm (loveLOVEtoofreeekincute), then finally this amazing top Lumi made with the perfect globe buttons to match my art- how awesome, sorry the pic's grainy...they look like little snowglobes of green glitter!!Deepdeep adventurously open V so I bought a green bikini top to wear underneath in case I was flashing anyone;)Not quite that daring yet.:

Breaks were taken up on the rooftop. so gorgeous and sunny with comfy bedlike loungechairs.
Breathe, D, breathe.....I'd catch a bit of solo time there and sun...eat a sandwich and then go back down to the room.

People walking in and out, so awkward/odd to be there while they looked at my art...but sometimes it felt right and they wanted to know more and we would get into good discussions.
After B left to go back home, I moved my stuff to the TownHouse room and stayed there the remainder of the days. Had to move all the art out of the bathroom to shower and carefully reassemble the exhibition the next day...Early morning I got myself down to the beach to hang out with the seagulls, beckoning them closer and closer with bits of my roll until I was surrounded and could see their beautiful feathers and details and eyes. Chastising the bullies and yapping/cooing with the shy ones...the flutter of wings all around...mmmm

I yapped with a lot of humans during these days as well, though I have no pics. Instead I have pockets full of scribbled websites and businesscards and postcards, which I'm going through slowly now that I'm back. I'll probably make a separate post with all the connections made. I feel like my network just doubled in size...and so many interesting projects people are involved in!
Last day I wore my sparkly china polka dot top and a big orange plastic D pin on my hip with a skirt and blue boots. hee. funny good luck outfit.

Pinky sold (Combining Spaces)to a woman who also bought SparkleSnowland and Dorthvo Cottages. There were a bunch of sales with 11 pieces selling total (woohoo!).
S+J are going to bring works to ArtMiami as well and stay down there to do 'by appointment' stuff from the apt they're staying in...so who knows...hopefully more will sell.!:)!
I'm going to check the peacecorps site and pick out the projects to donate to, I hope I hope I can complete one!! Lots of investment in this fair and that $500 materials stipend they gave me that gets deducted...so I didn't make a killing...but I think I covered all my expenses and can take care of some of my debt so that's great. Plus, there were SO many connections made...and MUSEUM people interested in my work (!) that I know this was SO worth it and will ripple on. Artists, get your butts to Miami next December for this, it's really really worth it.
Back home I was pooped. Ran into NYC to drop off works at Margaret Thatcher Gallery for the Mapping Show. B and I were taken aback by the gallery. it's a REALLY beautiful space...like bigtime intimidating NYC gallery! EEK! I don't know why, but I wasn't quite expecting it. Leaving, I was grinning ear to ear and B was laughing, both of us super-impressed and incredulous and shy, feeling like kids that snuck into a grown-up party.

here is 7 am, woke up with a horrible headache, waiting for painkiller to kick in, then off to paint. i'm painting an image in acrylic of a derelict building, on a very large sheet of paper, quite different from my usual work.
have a good night

Date: 2004-12-11 03:51 am (UTC)btw i was gona ask ya sumtin... ya r from NY rite?? well im lookin colleges and stuff from there... and i was wonderin if ya know any good ones... cuz i wanna study Latin American Studies :p
no subject
Date: 2004-12-11 07:44 am (UTC)Lacc at Stonybrook (http://naples.cc.sunysb.edu/CAS/lacc.nsf)
SUNY (state university of ny) Albany (which is upstate) has both majors and minors in latin american and caribbean studies:click here (http://www.albany.edu/celac/)
And I found this list of all colleges that offer that major if you want, not just ny though:latin american studies (http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/majors/brief/major_5-0107_brief.php)
oh and about the artworks, I usually work on a few small ones at a time since they go through different levels in the process...so I draw and paint them all first...(few days)then add nails, then any glitter and shrubbery or anything else that gets added(another day), then the first level layer of resin (another day), then draw again, then sometimes another layer (another day).

Date: 2005-01-01 09:46 pm (UTC)I'm so glad to hear you made so many connections. You didn't say how your nervosity worked out and whether you felt more comfortable with presenting yourself in public :o) Hope you were ok.. seems like it. You surely look great on the pictures (but everyone above already mentioned how gorgeous you looked) :o)
Love your work, so you are in a gallery in NYC now???

Date: 2005-01-02 08:13 am (UTC)I did make a profit, definitely... but of course when all is said and done, most of it was spent already...meaning I have to pay debts I accumulated. But hopefully all continues to go well. They'll be bringing my work to the ArtMiami fair now from Jan 6- 10 so keep your fingers crossed. oh I hope.
And there's no doubt I'll be sending all the 10% donations from these checks (and my paychecks from the shop) to the tsunami relief effort. *sigh* Such a mindboggling tragedy. Did I tell you about all the tsunami dreams I've had all my life? It's the element that recurs in my nightmares. *chills*
That's so great that you'll initiate a collection! *big Hug*
