The morning started out innocent enough, I was loving the solitude and the sun pouring in, drinking my coffee and writing in my bookjournal on the couch with the whole day ahead of me to work on art before the art reception at 4-6. Phone rings and it's The Bunny, and he locked his keys in his running car 2 towns away. Could I please purty please save the day and pick up his spare from his house 20 minutes in the OTHER direction from my house and him and get them to him? Um, sure. (this is The Bunny, I owe him bigtime, he has been MR.Reliable friend in my life for so many years). But INSIDE I grumbled. I whined. UGH, there goes my day...ugh all that driving....what a bummer when I'm all cozy wanting to stay home... Little did I know that the Karma police (bastards) had tapped my brain and were listening. So I throw some clothes on. Remove the 'Carnaval' makeup from my eyes (that's another story) and grab the small purse I had carried the night before, run out the door and jump in the car to begin the reluctant journey.
But I have no keys. NO. REALLY. I forgot my keys. IN the house. The very well-locked house. REally. (sound of karma-rake smacking into head). I laugh. ok. I try all doors and windows to no avail. I become obsessed with one window that SEEMED like it could possibly possibly consider not being impossible. I struggle with it forever. The 'almost' refuses to turn into a 'got it'. My hands are hurting and covered in some white window residue. ok. think. think. How ridiculous is this? Try not to think about that.
I start walking. There is a 20% possibility that a friend of mine is at his studio down the road. 20% because it's Sunday and I've never seen him there on a Sunday... But I can't think of anything else, so i start walking. And I experience the 3 Miracles:
*Miracle 1: A truck passes and sends a huge wave of muddy ice water up to the side just barely missing me. I would have been absolutely drenched. But wasn't. :)I move 'upland' to walk along the outside of a cemetary lawn.
*Miracle 2:My path becomes more and more ice-snowy and more slippery until I am looking ahead at the next 12 feet of ice-snow on a crazy slanted slope which leads down (if I were to slip) into a nice deep mud-ice water puddle. I make it without slipping. :)
*Miracle 3: My friend IS at the studio hosing down his car!:):):)

I tell him about my insta-karma and beseech him to either help me break into my house or drive me to pick up a spare house-key from B. He, understanding the precarious closeness of the karma police, says sure (I'm sure trying hard not to resent this little inconvenience). Well, he can't get the 'almost' window to give in either so we drive out together and actually have some good bonding conversation that we hadn't had 'time' for in a while. So anyway...after a while, everything got sorted out and I drove Bunny's spare to him at his gig. whew.
Later we all go to the art reception, and besides B., I am accompanied by my scandalously sexy italian girlfriend, one of those "I'm not really bad I'm just drawn that way" types. It's SO amusing to watch people's faces when she struts by. hee. ridiculous. anyhoo,Tons of art, some familiar faces but not as many as last year..Afterwards we (about 6 of us)head out to get some crazy delicious 'things that shouldn't be on pizza but somehow work' pies. My favorite has duck, goat cheese, cilantro and PLUM SAUCE. It's just so weird that I love it somehow. It's wrong but good. And a glass of red wine..:) And we talk of ghost stories, wet dreams, childhood and undertows.
And now, as B snores peacefully beside me, I tap away on these keys.but it's time for a glass of water and a peek into the studio......later all.have a nice night-night.

"Karma rake" is just such a wonderfully descriptive way to put the concept! Thank you for sharing the story :) I need all the reminders I can get to match attitude to action.

OMYGOD I SAW THEM!!!!! IT IS THE COOLEST THING EVER!!! THAT is what I paid for as a child when I bought 'sea monkeys' from the ad in the back of the comic books, not the jar of green water I actually ended up with. I was supposed to have THAT! I could watch them for hours! I could GUSH ABOUT them for hours. From a distance they looked like RATS! but then, oh, then, the details, the acrobatics, the little KISSES they gave eachother, the DANCING, the exhibitionist ones...OH it was just too fantastic! :):):) by the way there's a pretty cool assemblage art show at the East End Arts Council- my friend Megan has a piece there. peace.
