Down in the studio, priming five 12" square pieces to begin working on...listening to Ani Difranco's UpUpUpUpUp CD. I think it's my favorite album of hers, Every song just moves me and is so poignant and giving. I think it's a superConscious album, dealing with SO many complex things in a compassionate yet real way..addiction (come away from it), grief and depression (jukebox),forgiveness/wisdom(angry anymore),..etc.*sigh* you amaze me ani.way to go.

my fave parts from the song UpUpUpUpUpUp that echo inside me:
"half of learning how to play
is learning what not to play
she's learning the spaces she leaves
have their own things to say and
she's trying to sing just enough
so that the air around her moves
and make music like mercy
that gives what it is
and has nothing to prove

she crawls out on a limb
and begins to build her home
and it's enough just to look around
and know she's not alone

up up up up up up points the
spire of the steeple
but god's work isn't done by god
it's done by people "

Having just bought her new album (which I love) I went back and listened to some of her "older" stuff and was struck my much of the same things you mention here.
She's learning the spaces she leaves have their own things to say.
Indeed.
