AAF Friday
Jun. 21st, 2006 08:32 pmBus into NYC with the Vitamin V on Friday. We checked out the Affordable Art Fair...as a whole I wasn't feeling it like I was last year. I think the lighting and layout had something to do with it...but not much about the art was grabbing me. A few things stood out...but more of satisfying my personal aesthetic than blowing me away as 'powerful'. However, I loved Ross Bonfanti's cement teddybear. LOVED. WANT. TO HAVE. The eyes/expression said HUGGG and The texture was just absurd...with little tufts of fluff left off from the peeling process. Ross himself is a gem, a superlikeable guy to boot...I wish he lived closer (gallery is from Toronto). V's got a pic of us with the teddy I hope to snag from her and include here.
Enjoyed Christine Calderon's videobox drawings and large fractalized photographs of meat and fish by ___________?....I've been seeing a lot of meat themed stuff lately but this worked...really mysterious and beautiful and startling.
Pentimenti's artist Laura Bell's work I loved as well....of course...it's fantastical beauty inspired largely by diatoms and radiolarian shapes which you know i lust. I would have loved to have bought 2 of her paintings. Long talk with the gallery owner who had seen/liked my work back at scopeMiami...her gallery is in Philadelphia, I remember bookmarking it long ago...so we'll see what develops.
And then works by Joey Slaughter at Ada Gallery...all sorts...sculpture, paintings with a graphic quality, paintings with a more painterly quality....I liked it all. His installations look awesome too. (scroll down on this page)The gallery owner John was Crazyfriendly, talked with us forever even though the fair had pretty much closed.(!) We'll see him again at scopeHamptons, seems like a really good guy, looks out for his artists. Gallery is in Richmond, VA...
Met some nice chaps working at the coffee snack counter, talked a bit and exchanged info. One of them, Aaron is actually working on a documentary for GAN, Global Action Nepal(!) (bookmarked for a 10%donation, help him out if you can!). nice connection. His flickr pics are wonderful.
Afterward we met up with B and Luke and had some yummy Vietnamese food and ginger tea at Lannam and then headed off to Williamsburg to meet up with some friends at Galapagos Art Space. Our cab ride as pretty surreal- Luke sat in the front seat and there was a strage instrument there....and before we knew it the cabby was playing the 'tumbi' for us and teaching Luke while speeding down the nyc streets!
At Galapagos I wanted to dance but couldn't really get into the music in either room, couldn't hear anything either for conversation...but at least the margaritas were good. I'd like to return to see a performance series there. Seth and Nicola got their groove on pretty consistently, got to hand it to em. And Good ol Mouse shook his head but then shaked his rump to the worst of it, lil kawaii clownster that he is. We love the Mouse. Late night back to crash at V's where she had the foresight to insist I drink some water before snoozing. thanks hon.:)
Coming up next post: Saturday Renegade Craft Fair and Alphabet City Barbecue (with some piccies!)
