Ok, I realize i never really talked about the Miami show because I always felt too overwhelmed with where the hell to start. But I'll try. ArtMiami was definitely one of those WAY too much art for me to process
places. Quite a mixture. Not quite my cup of tea (a zillion booths in a
convention center) but mixed in with lots of really commercial blah works were lots of
really REALLY interesting works, and a lot of artists whose works had
intrigued me online!. I felt self-conscious hanging around where my works were so B and I kept looking around the whole place. I met and talked at length with one amazing woman
artist, Ani Villanueva, who was showing these wild organic looking
sculptures all made out of mass-produced domestic items such as dish drying
mats and plastic tag holders from clothing, etc. She's fascinating, making
statements about nature and the environment and she actually lives in a mud
hut in the rainforest in Venezuela!! She is a performance art also, as well
as a painter and photographer and a gazillion other things!. Check out her website and be sure to read about her performances, too! I love 'Garlands'.
Then there was this other guy whose name I forget now
errgh whose work I loved and we talked with him also- he collected little
pieces of paper, magazines and such from abandoned houses that he explored
around where he lived, then he cut out squares and stapled them into little
'books' (around 2 and 1/2" square) which he then SANDED down into these
topographical map looking things with organic edges and holes and then
arranged them in a grid like display box for the wall. Very cool.Wish I had
images for that but I don't.
As for selling anything, well, I was a little worried, but on the last day
of the fair, someone bought my 2 ft piece "The Book of Hope-Page 6"
(woohoo!)and then a woman who had bought a piece of mine at the Scope Fair
in December bought 3 more baby pieces (the ones that are 5 and 1/2" square).
so Yay.:) It helps. I'm still broke but I've got a little rent money!;)
I'm pretty excited though. This is the first time I've ever had an image in
a real catalog, and it's a full page image of my piece 'Connecting Islands'!:)!
And my parents had a blast. They live in Florida so we all went together and
they were Loving all the 'perks' like a free brunch and after party and
such. It was too funny. Mom tipsy-drunk and doing 'mom-brags' and basically telling me to sell out but in a way I could find funny enough to not get upset at. I like her tipsy.;)Or maybe I like myself being able to not take her so seriously.
I think as a whole the Scope Fair is the venue I prefer for my art, when you
enter a hotel room it's intimate and you're not overloaded by everything in
your peripheral, you know? The next Scope Fair in Miami in December, MLG
gallery said they want to 'feature' my work since it did so well there this
past Dec, so that would be Awesome, large pieces, the main room, etc. :)So
that's my plan for this year, get a new body of work together for that. And
I feel totally ready to work, I've got so many ideas I could burst. Been
really getting into cyberspace and 'play', aerial views and dolls and
artificiality...zooms..weird inspirations like Polly Pocket miniworlds and the Sims.
Now I've got to apply for some grants to figure out how the heck to be able to
survive this year and invest in all the materials and such.
But I'm nothing if not optimistic. Why the hell not.Go for it or just give up, right?. And I ain't givin up.;)
