I recently sold some artworks (and some missycakeland treats)(yay!) so while I'm waiting for the main check I'm looking through projects to donate my 10% towards.

School/Community Library
Location: DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Volunteer Coordinator(s):C. Patton of VA
Funds Needed:$2,720.00
Original Request:$2,720.00
Project Number:517-200
Community Contribution:$6,727.83 (71%)
"In the small rural community of Hostos, a school/community library is desperately needed. The students in the elementary and high school lack the basic resources and books to further their education. Currently, in our school there is no library and the only books that exist are text-books, which do not provide sufficient material to the students. Furthermore, the community as a whole lacks access to books, making the pursuit of knowledge incredibly difficult. Oftentimes students will have to find additional information for classes at home through encyclopedias, dictionaries, or computer programs. Very few students have access to these books and expensive computer programs, and therefore are unable to complete assignments as successfully as students with these resources. This gives an unfair advantage to the small percentage of the students who are able to afford these reference materials, and creates a cycle of poverty. The cycle of poverty can be avoided by the creation of a library, in such that every student will have access to basic resources and information. There is a huge problem of illiteracy in the community of Hostos. Many students have difficulty reading and writing, and their literacy does not reflect grade or age level. A lack of exposure to books and reading programs greatly contributes to this difficulty in literacy advancement.
In this project, we as a community are proposing that the partnership grant provide us with the necessary monetary resources to renovate a school classroom, and transform it into a school library for the elementary and high school students and for the community as a whole. Community members who are not enrolled in the elementary and high school will also have the opportunity to use the library. This will allow university students and parents who are continuing their studies to benefit from these resources. The monetary resources will provide paint for the ceilings and walls, furniture (book cabinets, table, and chairs), books, and supplies. The classroom we plan to renovate is in the elementary school which also serves as the community's high school. Currently, construction has started on a high school which will be located adjacent to the elementary school. In this way the high school students will always have access to the library."
