After a somewhat stressful day at work, I finally spent some time tonight in secondlife, quietly talking and mostly breathing and meditating with my inspirational westcoast friend and path-sister Evonne at ManorMeta on BetterWorldIsland.
She's been working hard to organize and create much interactive positive content inworld. Also helping to organize and promote CampDarfur, which I'll post about next.
somehow since I prefer either face-to-face interaction or email and have such a dislike/anxiety about the phone this works for me. It's something about the ability to have pauses....to talk more slowly....to actually just have the feeling of 'being' with the person. Phone and text chat (which i don't do) is so much about the words...a tennis volley going back and forth that's a bit sped up for my taste. This is a bit more about 'presence' within a realm. I like having something to focus on visually that represents the person...and a bit more pauses and space to think. At least that's my favorite aspect socially. Like I said, it can get very sped up as well...if there's a group...where I can hardly keep track of all that's said...
I find it really interesting! I jsut don't have time to invest into finding out if there are people there that would really trip my trigger. LJ was a big thing for me to start years ago and I've not really stepped beyond that. I want to get my own blog with a LJ feed but don't know how to say the least. I wish there were better ways to find people online in things like LJ as I've found some gems here. ;)
I actually haven't gone out of my way to meet new people there. I use it to explore the creations and meet up with people I know from other textbased online communities. like here.
what about myspace? I think it's pretty decent for searching and sort of rallying groups together around a certain interest...then you have to take it from there...I've already found a few gems through there. for instance this Other crazy fiberart gal (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=34850017&MyToken=d62bc9e9-c792-4f82-bc5e-db3192bbc8fa) I've started corresponding with from sanfran.you'd like.:)and who knows...there COULD also be strange lil folks that you don't know right in your town/area that are on there...
I think you'd actually love it, sammy. Basically it's getting to be and talk within a collaborative artwork/collage with people who are distant geographically. Like you and me. I like it best when it's one on one...otherwise I tend to get distracted/overwhelmed by the reading of chat. If your computer can handle it,(check the requirements on here)then I'd really suggest you give it a go. It takes some getting used to..but there's an orientation process and instructions on how to create your avatar. (I can only iMAGINE what you'd create to represent you!;)
Then one day/night we can meet up in there and just talk instead of on my major delayed friends-only-wineparty LJ pages...haha. I only go on once in a blue moon...but like last night, sometimes it's just the right thing.
