Slept in at the hotelroom. Not feeling so good bit of a cold I was hoping I could tame by a little extra rest and vitC. Wrote a bit in my bookjournal while Jane was still sleeping. When she woke we had tea and talked awhile lounging around. Then she went down to the pool and I showered and went off to Frisbee thinking I'd have to get the room ready since we didn't last night. But I forgot it didn't open until 1:00 and it was only noon and no one was there.(duh)*sigh* So instead I went for a walk around the area...enjoying the sun, looking at palm trees and buildings and cracks in pavement, glad to be out of cold NY, and getting a feel for where some things were located. Found a cybercafe and stopped in for a quickie session but just as I was finishing up a post my session ended and I lost it. bah. anyway glad to have a latte for the sippin.
Walked back to Frisbee and met up with Seth Adelsberger. (yay, new art friend.) He had arrived late the night before. I was surprised to see the room was already put together and looked pretty great. Downside was I had no wall space at all...only an area for the small works on tables. Many of the pieces I brought are really meant for the walls and I wanted to show that, not present them all as table sculpture. But it seemed obvious that to include some of my works on the walls the whole room lay-out would need restructuring so...after feeling out that it would be too stressful for everyone I just ended up swallowing it/letting it go. *sigh* Trying to remind myself that showing my works here was an extra last minute thing...I really came to See the fairs. But you know, still would've been nice to have the works displayed properly. *artistgripegrumble*

ANyhoo, Jane came around and we decided to share a cab with Seth and Bill to check out the NADA and Pulse fairs on 'the other side'(North Miami). Both great fairs. NADA's front lawn was strewn with hammocks and Bill started talking to someone lounging in one. Took me awhile but while talking we recognized eachother...he was one I had a good conversation with at my container at PARALLAX this past summer about virtual worlds..Kurt Bigenho..used to work with Alphaworld. Now he's working with Jeanna at Yoo Projects..which I have some overlap with as well (she shows Chris Natrop's work, the guy I had that 2person show in Houston with and several other artists I know and like and who've also shown with/at Sara's gallery). Inside I ran into Lucia Pizzani right away which was nice. She gave me an invite to a show she's in and I so hoped I could go but it was one of the few events that we had to give up due to being with a group and not being able to be in 2 places at once:(.

At NADA there was a certain rawness to the space that worked a bit better for me...the floors were concrete at least.I bonded quickly and felt very comfortable with Seth. Enjoyed walking around the fair with him for a while, commenting on pieces, showing eachother what we liked or didn't. But eventually, as would become a pattern for the rest of the fairs, we would all split up to look at things at our natural pace and mine was the slowest. Usually we'd be leaving way before I got to see it all.
I took note of a few things there: Miami gallery Ingalls and Associates had quite a few pieces that intrigued me. One was just ridiculously up my alley aesthetically...sort of combining my artwork pallette with my fetish/obsession with sparkly plastic jewelry and meshing it into an abstract painting I would eat - Aimee Jones' 'When it Rains it Pours'. In a similar vein, Lee Boronson's piece 'Kingdom Industries, Annex2005' with it's glitter sign paint, faux pearls and transcendent symmetry in a castle-like form ... I'm going to look into these artist's works more...

The work that truly moved me conceptually at NADA was a video piece called 'Another Paradise' by Francois-Xavier Courreges. Footage of a relationship over time of two lovebirds (yes, birds). I was entranced, smiling, then on the verge of tears, I couldn't bear to watch the loop...which was so telling. With difficulty, I moved on. In this new vulnerable open state I was then struck Hard by the amazing photographs of Robin Graubard.

Gathered back with my group,(now including Kurt),grabbed an empanada for the road and we headed to Pulse. Really enjoyed this fair also. Margaret Thatcher was there so I said hello. Ogled over the surface lushness of Markus Linnenbruk's work (drilled layers of colored resin and wood). My favorite pieces at this fair were ones that of course I would love. Walter Martin and Paloma Munoz have created totally engaging mysterious story moments in snowglobe sculptures which they then present as photographs as well in the way I so hope to with my own detail shots. OH HOW I LOVE. If I were a collector...oh yes. Then the photographic wall-pieces of Aneta Grzeszykowska and Jan Smaga from the series Plan. The whole series is brilliant and satisfying for me. (Yes this is my 'Neighbors' and cyber layouts in superreal and detailed photography- I could stare forever).

OK moving right along! We go to a brand new gallery space called Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin. It is huge yet minimal. We run a bit quickly through the rooms and are about to leave because we are early for the opening reception. But thankfully we stall a bit longer because it turns out to be amazing. Out in the backyard are loungebeds with big plush takashi murakami flower pillows on each, a full open bar (yay for champagne and the biggest fresh mohitos I've ever had), caterers with appetizers on trays, a full buffet DINNER (!!?!!), a dj with happy amusing cheesy lounge music (really it was perfect and got you smiling). The only downer was that it was pretty cold out, but hey we sacrificed.;)Sat on the beds and lawn, drinking and eating and having some good art conversations with Seth and Kurt...ran into Matt Satz and Franklin Evans..
After total high-end luxury satiation there we went to the raw energy opening for Deitch Projects Live Through This. Great juxtaposition, I like both.;) Woohoo- at Deitch I got to see much of the Swoon show that I missed in Brooklyn this year!! SO happy (I had seen pics and was so impressed, wished I had caught it). The Deitch space was great, total immersion installation. Met up with Esperanza and Lucia. Upstairs was insane- superloud, smashed beer bottles all over the floor, and just enough smoke that I lost my voice. Bye, voice. ohwell. At this point Jane was all for calling it a night and although part of me would've liked to continue, I knew I was really stretching it and had just taken my health down a few notches with the smoke room so I agreed and we got a cab. Seth and Bill and Kurt stayed out 'as bachelors'.lol And so concludes Thursday Day 2 of the madness.stay tuned for more if I can get the stamina to write more..whew.
