It's considered the art world's equivalent of 'SpringBreak', a cornucopia of contemporary art fairs and art related events and parties all taking place within 4 December days in Miami Beach, Florida. It's pretty insane and I am overloaded and exhausted and want a week to personally recuperate, no surprise. Think I'll just stay in pjs all day today (hack-cough-ugh) and try to recap....

My main partner in crime for the week was my awesome artist friend, Janey. (Jane Martin - check out her 'CloserFarAway series of video stills..gorgeous.) We planned our trip together (I had accumulated free airfare woohoo)and lucked out with a reasonable hotelroom within easy walking distance to most events. Took our mornings slow and easy in order to rest up for the crazy packed afternoons and nights. Pretty good plan I think.

Arrived Wednesday, NOv 30, afternoon/evening...disheveled from travelling and expecting to spend a while helping with installation, we bring over my small artworks to Sara Nightingale's room at the Frisbee Fair...but Sara is in the shower and tells us to hurry and change so we can to go with her to the opening at ArtBasel. Yikes! no slow starts here! I kinda wanted to hang around and meet the other artists and gallerists in Frisbee as they installed....some boxes and piles of colorful handmade pompoms in the hall had me intrigued (you know me and yarn..)...But well, seemed we 'should' go, so.

We rush back to our hotel room and I 'fancy up' by adding a maroon fabric flower pin(thanks, Leslie! aka [livejournal.com profile] green_wardrobe :)to my basic black tanktop, throw on a skirt instead of my sweatpants and some lipstick, quickprimpooohlalafaaaancy, Janey puts on silky pants and we're rushing back to Frisbee and out the door again into a taxi with Sara and Bill. whew.
As we enter the convention hall, Sara says "Ok girls, This is where you want to be." (as in look forward to reaching This, level of success.) But as I look around..hmmmI'm just not so sure. Yes, ArtBasel is the 'blue-chip art fair'...stuff that goes for hundreds of thousands....financially...it sure means you've made it...(and hey I wouldn't mind giving up my moneyworries, let's be honest)...but... it feels sooo sterile and cold there....give me the Whitney Biennial or PS1 back home and I'll feel I 'made it'. As for Miami, I don't think ArtBasel is where I want to be at all- not when there are so many more ALIVE feeling events going on in the same vicinity. The 'opening reception' of ArtBasel was just *YAWN*, no different from attending any other day..no music or ambience or even feeling that you're among artists..but ohyes oh yes you DO have the opportunity to pay $12 for a glass of champagne. (?!?) Now I reeeeaaaaly wanted champagne dammit but comeON. 'Benevolent universe always watching' heard and suddenly handed me a glass courtesy of an old friend of Jane's (Robert/Bob). yay BUAW;). Jane says Bob is in a sort of bratpack clique with artists Gregory Colbert (remember Ashes and Snow?) and Ciao Fonseca. He was with his 'dealer from Milan' and we felt a little out of place...bits of small talk..on an aside he was curious whether I was Jane's new GF...seems they used to be quite close..;)

Jane and I got through a small portion of the fair that night...but I didn't get swept away/moved by anything. I think I'd rather see that type of work in a museum...where the architecture around me evokes a sort of slow reverence and I can enter each object. Here in this blue carpeted multi booth place the work just felt... dead and expensive. Yet I love the art fairs in general..so what is it?..I guess for me it really IS more about emerging artists and feeling more intimacy...it has something to do with fuel...the excitement of something that is feeding a growing creative process...and ideally being in a space where art is palpably extended beyond the objects into the air (music, light, breath and conversations, dance, photographing, sketching, seeing together, experiencing..). I know I missed a huge portion of that fair and may have been moved by other sections, but the section I saw within the main building left me cold. The event closed down for the night and we walked a bit and grabbed a so-so slice at The Ministry of Pizza. Sat outside and discussed if we should continue on to some of the other events taking place...but both of us felt beat and we decided (wisely) to save our energy and call it a night.
Luckily I got much more of what I was looking for in the next days...
