Picking a project is often the hardest thing about the 10% vow...there are just so many amazingly necessary and hopeful things going on. But the best thing about it is that I know that I'll be donating again soon so I can choose another project next. I see it as helping to water seeds that heroic people are planting and tending around the world.
So after much deliberation, I've decided that the 10% from the painting I recently sold will go towards Barda School Reconstruction in AZERBAIJAN through Peace Corps Volunteer Project 314-003
"..About 900 students attend School #5 in Barda. Because of limited classroom space, there are two shifts of classes from 8:00am - 1:00 pm and from 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm. The current building was constructed in 1967 and has since been supplemented using trailers as classrooms. Following the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, the building has taken on the additional responsibility of serving as a home for several refugee families for the past thirteen years. The community, teachers, and students would like to perform basic renovations to the building. The concrete walls are chipping away and in desperate need of new plaster and paint. Several windows are missing glass, and while some have been replaced with pieces of clear plastic, this offers little resistance to the cold winds of winter. Where there is tile on the floor, it is cracked and broken, and the wooden floors have worn down over the decades leaving many holes. With the completion of this project 1300 students, teachers, and other employees of the school will experience a positive change in their learning and working environment. Partnership support is requested to assist with cost of acquiring materials for these repairs."
I did a bit of research on the area and the ongoing situation of refugees within municipal buildings...
So hard to imagine living this way for 13 yrs...*sigh*
Here's an article/survey I found on education in the area...defining problems but not quite offering solutions. In the meantime, I hope you'll agree with me that some attention is needed here.:(
Please consider supporting this project with a 10% donation if/when you can.
