Just finished a resin pour, so I'm taking a short break with the computer before getting back to artwork.
Check this out:

20Q.net is an experiment in artificial intelligence. The program is very simple but its behavior is complex. Everything that it knows and all questions that it asks were entered by people playing this game. 20Q.net is a learning system; the more it is played, the smarter it gets.

Try It?

Very Interesting!

The opening page said, "voodoo" needed practice, so I tried that one. Then I tried Christianity. Then I tried "a religion". Seems like it still has pretty limited words in its database.

The exercise brings to mind different ways in which words can be used.

the idea of helping the system learn just always gives me a warm fuzzy mommy feeling. Guess it goes back to a book i read long ago..Galatea 2.2 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0312423136/qid=1100814424/sr=2-1/ref=pd_ka_b_2_1/002-8090093-4148056)

Product Description:

After four novels and several years living abroad, the fictional protagonist of Galatea 2.2—Richard Powers—returns to the United States as Humanist-in-Residence at the enormous Center for the Study of Advanced Sciences. There he runs afoul of Philip Lentz, an outspoken cognitive neurologist intent upon modeling the human brain by means of computer-based neural networks. Lentz involves Powers in an outlandish and irresistible project: to train a neural net on a canonical list of Great Books. Through repeated tutorials, the device grows gradually more worldly, until it demands to know its own name, sex, race, and reason for exisiting.

I did Tao.

... =D Too funny. Also it's interesting things that are close to it when you get to the end (I always won on that one, I wonder if it will ever win on that one)

I love the way the system gives you weird statistics like 'most people don't know' and that sort of thing. It's pretty sweet. And the way it kind of hones in on your idea, based on people's previous answers...

All in all though the system is pretty simple! I mean it's obviously not going to come alive but it is a pretty good database of words. Maybe it could be used in the future to help another system speak English.

Oh yeah. This also really makes me think about the nature of reality; one person may have one conception of religion, and another person has a different conception of it... if you try to add them together, you get a bit of a contradiction. Maybe that's why "voodoo" and "religion" need more work - because people have contradicting ideas about them.

But also that means, what does voodoo really mean? How do you determine the 'authoritative source' of a piece of information? Does the meaning come from the people who DO voodoo, or does it come from what the masses think it means? Interesting. What is the reality behind voodoo? Does a reality actually exist, or is there no single "voodoo" concept, even though we have a word for that concept? Interesting.

Isn't it thought-provoking? so many questions..
I too wonder if 'meanings' will more quickly shift from top-down 'one dictionary authority' to the mean/average of mass usage. This in general as pertaining to our own evolution in a more networked world. Fuzzy language.;)

And how much can/will this particular system 'learn' with unlimited accumulated participation....I wonder!
