Annie Dillard, witch.
Dec. 8th, 2002 11:39 amI have not ever
Felt this way about a writer
The closest was Borges. I remember being stunned...
But this. She. Is more so.
The Janus. God of portals and beginnings. Seeing all ways at once.
It is magic, wisdom
TRANSFERRED by her words.
It is more than reading
it is caked wings unfurling
it is ancient eyes opening
tails and scales of all I am
She invokes spirits within me
waking them with remember
After a story, essay or poem
I must set the book down
and the howling winds of a thousand ages are swirling within my chest
I feel the need to shout
to someone, EVERYONE
(like the barking of trained dogs)
HERE it IS! Over HERE!
It is hiding in these words!
Come everyone and SEE!
This Annie Dillard is a witch
and she has changed me with but these words.
I am stronger now. and older.
I am here yet I am there.
I am ready to die and ready to live!
I don't know how long this will last
or what the side-effects may be...
but I tell you the potion I drank is in that bottle
In that book on that shelf.
Go see for yourself.
