um, well, ok, not exactly....hmmm,I guess my artwork is a movie star!still cool, no? *takes glamour glasses off and gets serious*
SO, if you go to see the movie 'It Runs in the Family' with Michael Douglas and Kirk Douglas and young DJ Douglas (forgot his name)...my artwork is in it!!! Hee. Ok, here's what to look for: First one you'd see is a bright red square piece with two columns of nail-text in it, this is in Michael Douglas' house/apt and you can see it over and over again when he and Bernadette Peters are dancing and talking near (I think it's) the kitchen. The other piece is my really big piece that I posted here recently (scroll back!), called The Writing Ritual. That's also in Michael Douglas' place, on the yellow wall, flanked by two primitive sculptures on either side, and Bernadette Peters stands in front of it a while..
They had also rented 'Prayers' from me and 'The Book of Questions' but I didn't see those anywhere- if you do, please let me know!!There was one super-quick flash in MD's bedroom when I think he put his keys down or something and it could've been in front of Prayers because there was a grey texture like the nails..but it was so quick that I couldn't be sure. ANyhoo, no one else will catch that either so I'd best forget about that one.
My mom is so excited about this, you'd think I was the leading actress. I'm sure when she went to see it (on the opening day) she was way too loud in all the 'wrong' parts of the movie, "THere! That's my daughter!!No, BEHIND Bernadette Peters!!!On the wall!!" hehe. You should have heard her hysterical message on my answering machine when she caught a glimpse of the red piece in the preview/trailer on TV. (Oh yeah, if you DON'T go see the movie at least look for the red piece in the trailer)
I DIDN'T see my name in the credits, which I suppose I should be miffed about because it was promised, but whatever. I'm not the type to make a stink about it. I just think it's damn cool to see the pieces like that. Very Weird, actually, but cool.
Oh, in case you're wondering how the hell my artwork ended up in the movie..;)it's a long story, but two years ago this lady came around through word of mouth to me and a few other artists in the area, she was working as set designer for an indie film that was going to have scenes shot in a 'Soho gallery' so she was looking for artists willing to loan out the work for filming. So I figured what the heck, was a LITTLE nervous letting the pieces out of my sight onto a truck to who knows where..but it went fine and I got them back in one piece. The movie was never completed, never made it, etc. So I figure that's that, oh well. TIL she calls me last year saying she's working on a MAJOR film and showed the head honcho set designer my portfolio and they wanted to use the works for Michael Douglas' apt. This time I even get a rental fee and insurance. So everything went so smoothly and I got my pieces back so fast that I kind of forgot about the whole thing..but now it's all over and it actually made it out into theatres and wow. look! it's my artwork!
Now that I'm all famoooos (in my little head and my mom's), all I have to worry about is making a living.;)*le sigh*;)

Wonderful - we'll make a point of seeing the film though fortunately we do like Kirk and Michael Douglas anyway.

I always notice nice patchwork quilts in films so backgrounds do count.

Well, at this point 'enough' is anything to help towards rent, and certainly not based on any understanding of what is 'supposed to ' happen in things like this. My boyfriend says you're supposed to 'demand' credit, but it seems silly to me, I mean they know it's my work and they're listing credits, I don't understand why it WOULDN'T be there. But, ugh, I'm trying not to be miffed about that aspect, you're NOT helping.;P

stuff like this used to happen to me a lot when i was a photographer, and even worst, like people using my stuff in magazines without my persmission.
i suppose you could remain happy with having your work in this film and see that little non credit incident as just a little thing to take care of at another opportunity, if it happens.

Hey, that's really alright. To know that your work is being seen like that, it's really kind of mindblowing. I'm looking forward to looking for it. And I'm kind of irked that your name wasn't in there either. I know the consensus is that it's no biggie, but shit. It means something to the motherfuckers down here in the trenches. Regardless, I'm glad that you were approached for this, and that your work was featured in the film. That's so great...

thanks, hon! It's POSSIBLE we missed it, because it was a hell of a lotta credits to sit through...but there were four of us scanning pretty earnestly and none of us saw it, so I'm assuming it just wasn't there. anyhoo, wish I could get a still shot or two of the pieces in the film, but I'll have to wait til the DVD comes out I guess. I checked out the stills posted on the web and no go. anyway, thanks for your supportiveness!:)

Hee. Thanks! It's just a matter of time for you- just keep at it, you're very talented- and do what feels REAL to you. Try to use your talent to show your thoughts, beauty and ideas and inspiration, not products you don't believe in. From the looks of LJ,You're already accumulating your audience!:)

Hollywood and the film industry have a deeply engrained, well earned reputation for leading people on with exaggerated promises. I think there's a reasonable explanation: many more people want to play in that sandbox, than there is room for, and that's the way they like it. So if they can get your cooperation by promising something that somehow doesn't make it into the written contract, who cares? You'll either get over it, and prove yourself to be a "trouper", or you'll walk, and there will always be someone else to come along.

I don't like it much, but understanding it makes it a little easier to deal with.

ah, it doesn't mean so much to me. I'm just hoping to get some good still shots for the novelty of it.

dearest avaD, mes thinks youve misinterpreted this one.he IS trying to be...'helpful'.while i've not had the privilege to see this movie starring 'miss d's' artwork (the halfway house demands my return by 6pm SHARP) they, whoever 'they'' are, gave it a crtical drumming.i believe the poster of the message thinks you should be grateful that you WONT be associated with it.the hollywood types do this by removing their name and mandating it be replaced by 'alan smithee'.then again....what the hell do i know?! hieronymous botched

Hee. but I'm not an actress in it!! Whether it flops or not is usually not determined by the artwork on the walls...(I think. yikes!maybe it was me!!;)
So really it's just one of those things for the art collector who likes lists (of which there are more than you would think)...lists of public collections, showings, places art has been shown and seen. It's a novelty resume thing, if they buy one of those pieces.
And also for my poor mum, who stayed in the theatre til the veeeeery end...waiting, hoping...to see a little name...
hehe.anyhoo. get out of this entry already! it's boring. I just linked it because you asked!;);P
