Empathy Box

Here are some pictures of the box-artwork I just finished for the East End Hospice charity auction.
(about EEH: East End Hospice cares for the terminally ill in their homes, providing pain and symptom control, as well as spiritual and emotional support to patients, their families and loved ones. No one is ever turned away, regardless of his or her financial situation.)
Since I've been working with the theme of empathy, I figured it would be even more appropriate for this occasion, so I made a 'Threads of Empathy' box. The definition you'll see is high-gloss ink-jet printed along with a small detail photo and set behind plexi-glass on the left side of the box inside. The media I used for the sculptural elements: nails, carved wood, tinted resin, enamel, sand, and monofilament 'connections', all set into a modified cigar-box.

When I want to shake my foundations and apathy hard I pick up a book called 'Material World- A Global Family Portrait'which reminds me that while I'm here immersed in my life and 'problems', I am forgetting that others are living incredibly hard lives RIGHT NOW. Lives I can hardly imagine...and it takes that book to coax me to see it and to want to use my 'more priviledged' position to try to help.
Then there's empathy with ALL others...just coming outside myself to try see a situation from someones ELSE'S eyes, with their perspective, fears, desires, needs,etc..
We all can use tangible reminders of empathy. It's so easy to get caught up in seeing life as 'our reality'.
