Friendships between humans and animals are beautiful on so many levels. It makes me feel like there is a place for Buddha-hood, even in the dog-eat-dog world of nature.
I really liked that first Rumi poem about the friends. Before I spent so much time alone, here in Orlando I would have thought, "Hmph, another insulting poem about the ego." But I really see what it means, not in an insulting sense, but in a realistic sense.
Our egos are what keep ourselves away from being at home within. When there is nothing to fight for or rail against or protect, when you're empty of all of that, you can finally have room to be at home within yourself... the end result is peace.
It's funny that what we think of as ourselves, want to be ourselves, or fear is ourselves and what we strive so hard to attain or avoid is the very thing that keeps us from having what all that effort is intended to gain. It's already there, and we get knocked off from it and then keep ourselves from it. Sometimes our entire lives.
The struggles with the addiction to nicotine have really made me notice my other addictions, mostly my addiction to approval (which contains the fear of rejection/insult) which is my addiction to perceiving myself in certain ways.
Perhaps separation can teach a deep lesson. I've learned something, but certainly not enough.

a woman called us saying she just lost a blue parakeet...so we thought we had found the owner...but she had only JUST lost it 2 days before...and we'd had Booberry goin on 2 weeks at that point. Thing is, she had another parakeet that was all depressed now with his friend gone...so we decided to see whether Booberry and this one would get along (they like to be in pairs at least, if not flocks). So Booberry now lives at a very interesting place called the Ark Project with this other parakeet. I can visit when I want....there are horses and sheep and neat artist buildings. I miss Boo but think it's for the best. I have a lil blue parakeet ring now as a memento, I think of him often...
