I agree, this sounds like one of those *TRUE DREAM*s, where the narrative is more powerful than the dreamer's understanding of its meaning.

I've come to believe that there is some ancient technology still at work in the world, what the ancients might have called "magic", what moderns would scoff at as "superstition". Forces that could sink atlantis, forces that could fuel a vampire's lifespan to 600 years or beyond. Faith is not required to partake of this miracle, it just helps the mind endure.

In A Fire Upon the Deep, Vernor Vinge calls this, "godshatter".
