I heard a talk this weekend by the women who run of the Institute for Figuring. They are running a volunteer effort to knit a coral reef - based on hyperbolic knitting - to raise awareness of the destruction of the Great Barrier Reef by global warming.

Very interesting and beautiful stuff, and they're using it to help affect positive change.
